Data Protection: Explanatory Note to Bedfordshire Beekeepers Association members:

The Data Protection Act 1998 obliges us, the Bedfordshire Beekeepers Association, to use information that we hold fairly and lawfully in accordance with the Act. It gives you certain rights, including the right of access to that data.

Although the Act allows us to use and process data, we want to tell you how we intend to use your information and give you the opportunity to give your agreement to that use.

We want to use your information (your name, postal and e-mail address, telephone and facsimile numbers, membership status and details of your hives) in connection with:

1.        Administration, management and business activities of the association, including making and keeping lists of members or associate members.

2.        Production and publication, by any means, of the Association Yearbook, newsletter or other publications and:

3.        Release and distribution of information held by virtue of the above activities or in the Associations records to members, associate or junior members of the Association.

4.   By signing and completing the membership application/renewal form you will also agree to the above.

NOTE: The Association will not make your information available to any organisation who might wish to advertise its goods or services.

I agree that the information which you hold for me referred to in the Explanatory Note (above) may be obtained, processed, used and disclosed as stated in the Explanatory Note.

Additional Rights in Favour of the Association

Protection of Bees in case of Brood Diseases and other Ailments

The Association believes it is important in cases of confirmed or suspected brood diseases or other ailments affecting bees or beekeeping (the Troubles) that the following activities (the Activities) can freely take place in the best interests of all concerned.

§ a) All companies, authorities and others (including the National Bee Unit) involved with such cases and the Association can discuss and confer with and release and divulge information to others of them about the Troubles without restriction; and

§ b) The Association can discuss and confer with and release and divulge information to members of the Association and others who may be affected by the Troubles.

Current law may prevent the Activities. For example, when European Foul Brood has occurred in Beds the National Bee Unit has not been able to tell us the name of the beekeeper concerned or the exact location of the outbreaks so the Association has been unable to help the beekeeper or to warn other beekeepers. This clearly is a nonsense, but by signing this form you will remove the restriction and nonsense as regards yourself and the Association in the very unfortunate event of you encountering a Trouble will be able to offer you and other beekeepers their support. If you don't want this to happen then tick the box.

Bee Stings and Allergic Reactions

I am aware that practical beekeeping unavoidably involves some risk of stings. While these are to most beekeepers no more than a passing nuisance, to a few people they may pose a more serious risk, as described in the advisory leaflet B2 on stings prepared by the British Beekeepers Association (www.britishbee.org.uk) which I have read and understood.

I declare that either I have never had to consult my GP as a result of an insect sting or bite, or that if I have so consulted I am currently following any medical advice given to me.

I understand that, as a condition of my membership,if I attend any live-bee event organised by the Bedfordshire BKA I must bring any medication for insect stings which has been prescribed for me, and on arrival tell the organiser exactly where it is and who (if anyone) has my permission to administer it.

So that we can keep the Yearbook up-to-date please tick or circle if you hold any of the following British Beekeepers Qualifications?

Basic Certificate of Apiculture

Intermediate Certificate of Husbandry

Advanced Certificate of Husbandry

Microscopy Certificate

Honey Judge

Intermediate Theory Certificate

Senior Exam or Advanced Theory Certificate

To all companies authorities (especially the National Bee Unit), the Association and others concerned with the Troubles or involved with the Activities as mentioned above.

I agree that in the event of a Trouble each and every one of you may carry out the Activities without restriction and I direct you to do so without need for further confirmation from me.

Please note:          This form or details from it may be produced to any third party as evidence of your agreement in the event of any Trouble even though it may not affect you or your bees.           Issue 1/12
